A bit of folklore, an email thread printout from the MSN dial-up client, and a whole lotta oatmeal and chocolate combine for this legendary cookie recipe. As you might have deduced from the name, this cookie recipe was for the cookies that are served in the cafes in the Neiman Marcus stores.
As the legend goes, a shopper was lunching at the Neiman Marcus Cafe in Dallas and decided to splurge on dessert. She and her daughter enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies they ordered so much that they asked for the recipe. For ”only two-fifty,” the waitress said, it was theirs. But when the charge card bill arrived, the shocked woman found the total near $300. Hard to understand, since she had bought a $20 scarf, two $9.95 salads, and the cookie recipe. Turns out the recipe cost $250. When the woman couldn’t get her money back, she took revenge, sending the recipe by email forwarding chain to all her friends and asking them to pass it on. The recipe now has undoubtedly been around the world and back.
In writing this post, I did a bit of research, and the truth is that there is no Neiman Marcus Cafe. I’m also now old enough to know that you would never find a $20 scarf at Neiman Marcus but the magic is not ruined in my eyes. Yeah, the origins of this mythic recipe is just that – myth based in no actual reality. Don’t worry though, the delicious-ness of this cookie is also legendary – and that’s based completely in factual reality. Trust me, I’ve tasted a lot of em.
Justin requests these gems each and every time he visits home so I snuck over to take some photos and get tips from the pros as Mom made them last week.
